The Importance of Feathers

  • Feathers were the most important element of any ruler’s headdress.

  • Gold and the feathers of the Quetzal bird were only allowed to be worn by Royalty.

  • Feathers were very important to the Aztec people and even thought the exact reason that the feather was such a revered object is not entirely known however it is thought to because of their connection to the birds which can perform a feat that no human can do and that many dreamed of doing; fly.

  • The bird’s power to fly was regarded with such awe because this power allowed them to fly up to the Sun God Tonatiuh, and be with him. Feathers were also linked to the God Huitzilopochtli, who was the God of the feather workers.
