Aztec Clothing
Who made the clothing of the Upper Class? Was this different for the Lower Class?
-
To make the clothing of the upper class was a full time job for the middle class citizen who was usually employed to do so.
-
Even though the noblewomen could have someone weave for them, it was still considered to be important that they too know how to weave and procure clothing.
-
Weaving was an important job and the Upper class were rich enough to employ someone to do it all for them. The weavers would also make the clothes for their own family, which is what all of the lower class did.
-
The weavers lived in a special quarter of their own in the home of the nobles along with the other craftsman and artisans employed by the nobles.
-
For the lower class, when girls were young, they were taught by their mother how to make the clothes out of the ayate fibre which was the main fabric used by the commoners.
-
Once they were married and had a family, it would then be their job to make all of the clothing for their family. If they had a daughter, it would then be their job once she was old enough to teach their child the same skills that they had been taught by their mother. They would teach them how to look after their future family and of course make the clothing for them.
